Quick OverviewBack to Success Stories
The redevelopment of the existing Yarra Trams Preston Workshops to create the New Preston Depot was a significant part of the State funded transformational E-class tram program.
The client Yarra Trams, funded by Public Transport Victoria, had a project requirement to take a 1930’s-heritage listed tram workshop and transform it into a 21st century facility. The facility was to stable and service up to 75 E-class trams, as well as provide upgraded staff facilities and update and reconfigure heavy maintenance workshop, servicing and collision repair facilities.
“New Preston Depot is one of the most modern tram depots in the world and it has set a new benchmark in our industry in terms of technology and automated services, which will create significant service delivery improvements for our network and the people of Melbourne.”

A key challenge was to continue to allow servicing activities to continue while transforming the site. This also required maintaining heritage facades, facilities and equipment.
Indec was originally engaged by the State Government to provide expert advice and then partnered with Yarra Trams in developing the master-plan concept for the site, drafting of the project brief, undertaking the technical evaluation of the tenders for the design and construction works as well as providing technical advisory services throughout the entire delivery phase.
This has resulted in the project being delivered in a timely fashion and within budget, a major success for the Victorian State Government. The facility was officially opened by the State Minister for Transport, Jacinta Allen, and CEO of Yarra Trams, Nicolas Gindt.
“This brand-new home for our biggest trams will support services, skills and jobs, and ensure our tram network grows as Melbourne does.”
